Coolsculpting or cryolipolysis is a cosmetic technique performed to remove pockets of unwanted fat cells in certain parts of the body without the use of needles, scalpels, or anaesthesia. The idea of coolsculpting is to freeze and destroy fat whilst leaving your surrounding skin and tissues unharmed, even if you have scar tissue.
Younger patients who experience baggy eyelids or droopy eyelids that run in the family may also be well suited to this procedure.
How does CoolSculpting work?
Coolsculpting is not a surgical procedure. Instead, the coolsculpting procedure involves the use of a device that quickly cools and exerts its effect to eliminate fat cells. Fat cells freeze at a lower temperature than other ones in the body, and the programmed cell death part of the treatment starts.
The device extracts energy from layers of fat safely, making the stubborn fat cells die gradually without affecting the surrounding anatomy. The dead fat cells are then excreted via the lymphatic system months after commencing treatment.
Lifestyle choices, genetics, or simply time and gravity can result in areas of stubborn fat and, in some cases, even bra fat. No matter the culprit, many of us have pockets of unwanted fat, regardless of whether or not we follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.
A gel pad and applicator are first applied to the target area by your cosmetic physician. The applicator is what delivers the controlled cooling effect.
Your cosmetic physician will then move the applicator around whilst administering suction and controlled cooling technology to the target area, ensuring adequate fat reduction is obtained and the cell membrane breaks down.
Following treatment, the crystallised fat cells are slowly and safely expelled from the body over the next few weeks and months.
After having a CoolSculpting treatment, any remaining fat cells condense, significantly reducing the fat in the treated area.
The reduction of fat cells in treated areas improves the appearance and balance of the body. You can say “goodbye” to that stubborn fat!
Coolsculpting is an effective treatment that is used to get rid of unnecessary fat that doesn’t seem to budge regardless of diet and exercise.
Am I a good candidate for Coolsculpting treatment?
The best candidates for our Coolsculpting procedure are individuals who are:
- Of an ideal body weight (the procedure is most effective in those who are within 5-15 kg of their ideal body weight)
- Have areas of fat they can grab, such as a banana roll
- Have good skin elasticity and tone
- Have realistic expectations
Benefits of Coolsculpting
Coolsculpting was FDA-approved in 2010. Since then, clients all over the world have been singing their praises for this excellent treatment. Why? Let’s take a look at 3 big reasons as to why most patients are happy after their intense cold treatment:
- It’s comfortable – unlike surgical fat reduction techniques such as liposuction, Coolsculpting is non-invasive, easy, and above all, offers 0 downtimes, meaning that patients can carry on with their regular activities post-treatment. Also, the treatment plan doesn’t affect muscle cells.
- No need to put you to sleep – this fat reduction procedure can be performed without the need for anaesthesia or sedation, meaning that you no longer have the risk of the side effects typically produced by general anaesthesia.
- Can treat many targeted areas – Coolsculpting is used for the lower abdomen and can be used to treat most parts of the body.

What are the best target areas for Coolsculpting
Coolsculpting is suitable for any fat layer unaffected by exercise and diet, including;
- Submental fat, e.g. double-chin
- Abdomen, stomach
- Man-boobs and bra fat
- Upper arms
- Outer thighs and inner thighs
- Hips, flanks, e.g. love handles
- Upper and lower back
What should I expect during fat freezing treatment?
This will be explained in detail during your consultation. During one session of Coolsculpting, which will take anywhere between 30 minutes to one hour (depending on the area treated) a “vacuum” works on the targeted regions of your body. While this is taking place, you can relax by watching television or reading.
When this is all done, all that is required from you is drinking water. Normal activities can be resumed straight away and you’ll be ready to start a new healthy lifestyle.
More significant areas like the abdomen can be handled with a larger applicator halving the time required that other procedures would take to treat the same sections.
How much does CoolSculpting cost in Sydney?
The fat freezing cost in Sydney can vary depending on your individual goals. The treatment can treat a number of areas that significantly differ in size. The difference in the size of the treatment area then corresponds to the total cost of your procedure.
For a more accurate price estimate, we recommend arranging a consultation with one of our cosmetic experts. We offer various treatment plans starting at just $30/week.

How quickly will the results of Coolsculpting be evident?
It is important to note that Coolsculpting is not instant as it uses the body’s immune system to remove fat, and this process can take four to six weeks before the results are noticeable. The benefit of this is a more natural slimming over time, lessening the fear of noticeable cosmetic surgery results for friends, family, and co-workers.
What are the risks and side effects of Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting is considered a safer alternative to liposuction mainly as it does not require an anaesthetic. This being said, it is still a medical procedure which means there is a small risk of side effects.
These may include mild discomfort during the treatment, or some bruising in the targeted areas, which will likely be tender to the touch for 24 to 72 hours following the treatment. This is normal and to be expected. In rare cases, late-onset pain from nerve irritation can occur around the third to fifth day after the procedure.
Which is better, Liposuction or Coolsculpting?
Liposuction is considered a more aggressive treatment; however, more fat should be removed in a single session. CoolSculpting removes less fat per treatment but is far less invasive. Several sessions of CoolSculpting may be required to get the desired result; however, you will experience less downtime.
What happens if new fat forms in the treated area after my procedure?
After one Coolsculpting cycle, around 20-25% of the fat cells in the treated area will disappear. Any newly formed fat will then be evenly distributed to whichever fat cells remain.
The fat cells that have been removed during this procedure will not return.
